LUCILLE LONDON.png

A prestigious mourning ring from George III's reign in Memorium of Sir Edward Winnington, a Baronet and member of Parliament holding the seat for Bewdley as MP between 1761 and 1774.

The 22ct gold ring is a vibrant, rich yellow gold with black enamel surrounding the text "Sr Edwd Winnington Bart OB: 9 DEC 1791 AE 65" detailed around the outside.  The enamel has been applied using the champlevé technique, and, as to be expected with an original piece of this age, it is wearing away in places, although the text can still clearly be seen throughout.

The hallmarks on the inside of the band show the date letter for 1791, which is still crisp and clear, as well as the standard mark that recognised 22ct gold and silver at the time (silver and 22ct gold were marked with the same standard mark until 1816 when an additional mark of the ‘sun in splendour’ was also struck on 22-carat gold).  Other details within the hallmark, including the markers mark, are faded due to age.

The inside of the band is curved for a comfortable fit, so the ring hugs the finger beautifully.

Sir Edward Winnington, 1st Baronet, was born circa 1728. He was the son of Edward Winnington and Sophia Boote and married Mary Ingram, daughter of John Ingram, in 1749.  Sir Edward Winnington was created 1st Baronet Winnington of Stanford Court Co. Worcester [Great Britain] on 15 February 1755.  He held the Member of Parliament (M.P.) office for Bewdley between 1761 and 1774.  He died on 9 December 1791.
