A deeply evocative and wonderfully substantial Georgian mourning ring, dated 1815 and beautifully preserving both its sentimental history and striking visual presence.

Crafted in richly toned gold, this extraordinary piece features a dramatic domed cluster of 13 black jet stones, creating remarkable finger coverage and a beautifully bold silhouette. The predominantly original faceted jet stones contrast strikingly against warm gold closed-back settings, embodying the sombre elegance so prized in period mourning jewellery. One discreet replacement side stone is present, but blends beautifully with the overall design.

The black enamel memorial band is inscribed in crisp gold lettering: “JNO GRUNDY OB 14 SEP 1815 AE 67” (John Grundy, died 14 September 1815, aged 67). This classic Georgian inscription style uses “OB” (obiit) for date of death and “AE” (aetatis) for age, preserving a deeply personal tribute over two centuries later.

A particularly fascinating construction detail can be seen to the reverse of the centre stone, where its slightly raised closed-back setting creates a subtle star-like pattern — a beautiful glimpse into the hand-built craftsmanship of the period. The darker area visible here is patina, adding further authenticity and character.

Though unhallmarked (not unusual for the era), the closed-back settings test at approximately 18ct gold, while the enamelled band areas test closer to 16–17ct, likely reflecting period construction methods, solder, alloy variation, or enamel interference during testing rather than later alteration.

A rare and beautifully wearable piece of personal history, exceptionally compelling for collectors of Georgian jewellery, mourning pieces, or lovers of bold antique rings.
